Malibu-housesThe Feds strike again! They began the crackdown by sending out warning letters earlier this month to medical marijuana collective (in California dispensaries are referred to as collectives) owners throughout Los Angeles County.

Two of the collectives affected are in Malibu: Malibu Collective Caregivers and PCH Collective. PCH Collective officially shut their doors on June 19th, and Malibu Collective Caregivers will close down by July 1st.

asa-unity-conference-ab2312-rallyAssemblyman Tom Ammiano, who had authored Assembly Bill 2312, pulled his bill yesterday from the Senate vote. AB 2312  would have regulated and taxed medical marijuana in California. Ammiano believes that there should be more committee meetings and a detailed report on the issue before a more comprehensive bill is created for the legislature to adopt in the new session next fall.

mmj sign spinnerThis summer, the Denver City Council is putting forward the effort to limit unattractive and bothersome sign spinners as well as other outdoor advertising for medical marijuana.
It is always preferred that an industry polices and controls itself, but if the government must get involved, it is always favored that guidelines and regulations are set verses a complete citywide ban.

As of today, it seems councilmembers will consider two possibilities. Councilwoman Debbie Ortega's proposal would ban outdoor advertising for dispensaries within 1,000 feet of schools, child-care centers, parks and recreation centers. However, this proposal is not enough for councilman Chris Herndon. He is pushing push for a total ban on outdoor advertising for dispensaries.

In New Jersey, the Mount Laurel Township Council heard a proposal to open a medical marijuana distribution center in the town. The proposal did not receive a explicit vote by the council, but it did move for more research to be done before the matter reconvenes at a later date.

However, a new study shows that the legalization of medical marijuana won’t increase the usage among teens, nor lead them to use other drugs.

san leandro city councilSan Leandro City Council, in a 6-1 vote, has agreed on a one-year ban on medical marijuana dispensaries and grow operations.

In what can either be construed as a victory for either side, the interim ban will allow the city to see how state and federal governments handle the issue in the pivotal coming months leading up to the general election.

marijuana-floating-on-ocean-surface-in-california-e1337612067564In another telling sign of how opponents of safe, legal, voter-approved medical marijuana are providing a business boon for the violent Mexican drug cartels, 19 tons of marijuana were seized off the coast of California near the border with Mexico Tuesday.

The United States Navy spotted two single engine 25 foot long boats about half a day apart on Saturday, 85 miles off the Mexican coast in international waters. They were seen dumping numerous plastic bags overboard before escaping.
