Los Angeles Councilmen Huizar and KoretzTwo proposals were raised Wednesday in the Los Angeles City Council propose a "gentle ban" on dispensaries within the city. Both proposals would go into effect in the next couple of weeks, crippling the local medical marijuana industry and potentially keeping thousands of patients from their medicine.

Councilman Jose Huizar and Councilman Paul Koretz both seek to ban dispensaries until the California Supreme Court is able to rule on the legality of imposing the city's 2010 medical marijuana ordinance. The ordinance attempts to establish rules for zoning and operating dispensaries. For example, the ordinance states that dispensaries cannot be within a 1,000 foot radius of a "school, public park, public library, religious institution, licensed child care facility, youth center, substance abuse rehabilitation center, or any other medical marijuana collective(s)."

marijuana pollA poll carried out by independent polling firm Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, Inc., on behalf of The Marijuana Policy Project, has found that an overwhelming 74% of Americans would like President Obama to respect the medical marijuana laws in states that have legalized marijuana.

The poll's results are important for many reasons, but drive home the message that marijuana on a state level is indeed an issue of significance, unless you're Mitt Romney. But Romney might want to listen up: Mason-Dixon Polling & Research found that within the 74% of pro-pot Americans, 67% of Republicans polled showed support for marijuana as well.

Ellen RosenblumMarijuana activists in Oregon are celebrating a small victory today, as former Oregon Court of Appeals judge Ellen Rosenblum - a marijuana supporter - has won Democratic nomination for attorney general.

Because no Republican candidate stepped up for nomination for attorney general, Rosenblum is now the presumptive winner of November's general election for the position.

Medical marijuana activists attacked Rosenblum's opponent in the Democratic race, Dwight Holton. Activists said that Holton would threaten medical marijuana in the state, though Holton claimed he would uphold the law. Holton had, however, attacked Rosenblum previously, pointing to her intention to make marijuana enforcement a low priority.

topanga state parkIn just one more of a rapidly growing number of examples of why medical marijuana crackdowns hurt more than help not only our economy and suffering patients, but the environment as well, more than $100 million dollars worth of marijuana was found in California's Topanga Canyon State Park, the country's largest State Park within city limits.

colorado-signProponents of medical marijuana in Colorado shouldn't expect postcards from Sen. Nancy Spence while she's on vacation, but they might want to send her a couple. In Spence's absence, the THC DUI driving bill in the state died for the third time - all because Spense was not present to vote in favor of it.

Earlier in the day, the Colorado House signed off on HB12S-1005, which would, among other things, set a per se DUI limit in the state of 5 nanograms of THC per 5 mililiters of blood. The Senate, however, tied 17-17 on the issue, and no tie-breaker could be coersed from Senate members. Had Spence been in attendance, she would have voted in favor of the DUI bill, as she had earlier this year.

marijuana prescriptionResearchers from the University of California, San Diego have released a new study linking positive effects of smoked marijuana to multiple sclerosis, giving sufferers of the disease hope for new, alternate forms of treatment.

Lead researcher Jody Corey-Bloom, M.D., Ph.D. set out to see if marijuana could have positive effects on spasticity, muscle tightness and pain that is a common symptom of multiple sclerosis.

Corey-Bloom and her fellow researchers at UCSD's Center for Medical Cannabis Research found that yes, positive effects exist, even if only qualitatively, and more research needs to be done in light of these findings.

OCTA 2012Backers for the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act (OCTA 2012) turned in 27,401 signatures Friday for the month of April, bringing their grand total to 84,539. They need 87,213 signatures by July 6 to ensure inclusion on Oregon's November 2012 ballot.

Back in March, Willie Nelson came out in support of OCTA 2012, and since then, the drive has been promising for proponents of the act. OCTA 2012, according to their website, "allows personal marijuana, hemp cultivation/use, without license; commission to regulate commercial marijuana cultivation/sale." Supporters also say the act can help revitalize Oregon's economy.
