Munchied: Izakaya Den

Munchied izakaya

When referencing a good sushi spot in Denver there are really only three places that stand out to any true sushi aficionado: Sushi Sasa, Sushi Den, and Izakaya Den. While you really can’t go wrong with either of them, I just happened to be in the mood for sushi as well as some amazing Japanese Tapas, so that made the decision easy: Izakaya Den on South Pearl Street (just across the street from Sushi Den).

The kicker with Izakaya is that because they are owned and operated by Sushi Den, they still get the amazing, high quality fish that their sister restaurant does, but they also have some of the most amazing appetizers and entrees of any Japanese restaurant I have ever been to.

Munchied: Russell’s Smokehouse Pies

DSC00782There are very few strains of herb that get me as lifted as a really good New York City Diesel. Now I know what you’re thinking, “I can’t believe he’s talking about NYC Diesel. Everyone grows that. Or you can get that at any dispensary. It’s nothing too special.” And any many cases you would be right, which marks a very telling day in the annals of marijuana history; however, given the correct circumstances it can still pack the same punch that caused you to literally pass out in your refrigerator freshman year of college.

I honestly hadn’t smoked a variation of NYC that made me want to swear off all other types of herb in some time…until recently. A very close friend of mine managed to get a hold of some clones that were apparently just one generation off of Soma’s (who also bread the Somango that I had mentioned a couple of months ago) NYC Diesel seeds. While at lunch one day he mentioned that this medicine had just finished curing up quite nicely and invited me over for a sesh post-lunch (I obviously accepted).

Munchied: Tom’s Home Cookin’

DSC00774

Being originally from the south, there are a few things that are nearly impossible to replicate. Most importantly: food and not the blistering heat and humidity. Whether it’s the barbecue, the fried chicken, or just “soul food” in general, there is just something in the water (or fryer) down there that you can’t get anywhere else.

That’s why when I first heard of “Tom’s Home Cookin’” in the historic neighborhood of 5 points, I was skeptical to say the least. Restaurants claiming “southern food” have let me down far too many times, but I must admit, Tom’s has got ‘home cookin’ down to a science. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Munchied: Masterpiece Deli

DSC00763

Everybody seems to have their go-to neighborhood deli that they hit up at least once a week. You know, the one where you know every single detail about the menu without having to even look at it. Where you know which sandwich to order depending on what that particular day has in store for you, which one to order if you are going to be eating in the car (the cubano), or if you are hung-over (pastrami special).

Well for me, that place is Masterpiece Deli and it definitely isn’t in my neighborhood, heck, it’s not even anywhere near my neighborhood. As a matter of fact, it is pretty much completely on the opposite side of town from me. It would be hard to find a farther deli from my house, but knowing that the Masterpiece is out there and choosing to go to a different deli strictly for convenience? Well, that just seems completely insane.
